When social change takes centre stage

You’d be forgiven for thinking studying is a mere side gig for this talented rapper, composer and actor. But Piath Mathiang (stage name P-UniQue) is a passionate student, planning to use her degree and influence to help the community.

“I chose VU because of its involvement with the community and how it caters to individual students’ needs. Since high school I’ve been interested in politics – eager to make change in my country and our political system. VU’s Arts degree provides the political science and sociology units I’m interested in so I can pursue a career in politics and society both here and overseas.

"I think the greatest difference with the VU Block Model is that you study one unit at a time, rather than cramming four subjects at once and enduring that stress. I also have more time to do extra readings and hang out with family and friends. And I have more energy for my other passions.

"I got into acting after a friend encouraged me to audition in 2017 for (AACTA award-winning SBS series) Sunshine. My acting coach (Greg Saunders) pushed me to sign to an agency and I’ve since had roles in award-winning programs Nowhere Boys (season 4) and Romper Stomper, and continue to dabble in acting when I get time.

"Rapping is my biggest passion now – it enables me to express myself in a way that acting can’t. My love for writing and performing music grows stronger with each year and I now rap professionally. I’ve played many shows and festivals including the recent BigSound festival in Brisbane.

"At uni I’ve made bonds and connections with such incredible people. You make friends that become like a family sharing so many of the same units.”
