Prize-winning plumber

Winner of the 2017 Energy Safe Victoria Award, Bryce Williamson, left school at the end of Year 11 VCAL to pursue a plumbing apprenticeship, and further his studies at VU.

The resources at VU are excellent and I’ve received so much help from the staff - it’s a great place to study. Teachers put in a lot of work to ensure students gain as much knowledge as possible and I believe that this is one of the main reasons I was able to win the Energy Safe Victoria Award.

All the teachers are plumbers and provide us with vital information around what it’s like once you’ve finished your studies. Many of the teachers have also owned businesses in the past, so I definitely know I’m being taught by experts in the field.

When I’m not at VU, I work full time as a plumbing apprentice at Accurate Plumbing. My boss and the other tradesmen have all completed the same certificates I’m currently studying, so I’m learning valuable skills from them too.

I’m still finishing up my Certificate III in Plumbing and have been able to enrol and begin Certificate IV classes at night. This means I can become licensed quicker. The thing I enjoy the most about my studies is that I have the opportunity to learn about different aspects of the trade that I don’t always get the chance to learn about at work.
