Looking for a career where she could help people in a meaningful way, Bianca Yankov set out on a journey in community services. She shares her experience at VU Polytechnic and how she hopes to make a difference.
“I chose the Certificate IV in Community Services CHC42015 because community services is booming in Australia, and I wanted to get in a field where I know there will always be a demand.
“I genuinely enjoy seeing people prosper and how they can bring out the best in themselves. Sometimes all people need is a bit of guidance and they start shining.
“If I can bring hope to people in the community and put a smile on their face, then I’m looking forward to doing just that in the near future.”
Feeling at home in the West
“I chose to study at VU Polytechnic as I have studied there in the past. I successfully completed a Certificate IV in Youth Work CHC40413 before the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I’m a Westie through and through (go Doggies) and I have had family members study at VU and recommend it to me. My campus was close to home, so it was easy to get to, and they have great facilities to help with your studies.
“All the services VU offers as well are so important to help students out with things outside of studying, such as tax return help, counselling services, free meals – the list could go on.”
Finding support & community
“I loved getting to make new friends and sharing different thoughts and ideas in the community services field. My group was small but we were all so close, helping each other out through emails and Facebook messenger.
“I’m lucky I have a great coordinator who was easily contactable and was very understanding when I got sick with COVID.
“Teachers were easily contactable and the learning support team were great in giving me that extra assistance I needed when it came to assessments.”
On the path to a rewarding career
“The best thing about my course was realising how broad the community services field is and all the avenues that I can take.
“I’m planning on continuing my studies and I have enrolled in the Diploma of Community Services CHC52015.
“I’m looking forward to the placement component and doing it at a housing service, as I would like to help people with securing accommodation for themselves or their families and giving them the support they need to have housing security.”
