After an unforeseen circumstance forced student Fatma Abdulhussein to leave high school early, her dreams of studying at university were still made possible thanks to Victoria University (VU).

Born in Iraq, Fatma began her journey with VU in 2015 when she enrolled in a secondary school qualification, the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), at VU's TAFE division.

Then able to enter university, Fatma undertook a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care CHC50113 which served as a building block to her current degree, a Bachelor of Criminal Justice.

Fatma, whose sister recently graduated from VU's Bachelor of Business, says her course has helped her to gain practical work experience and a head start in her career.

"When I graduated from my diploma I had a job straight away. And because I'm a VU student I get so many offers jobwise."

Employers recognise the name and ask if I'm a student, because they know VU students have done work experience and are job-ready.

Fatma says she was attracted to the University's inclusive community, as well as the welcoming staff and academic support.

"They accept everyone here and the staff are so welcoming. You feel like you're at home.

"VU's academic services are also really good. I recommend to anyone that needs help during their studies to go there."

Now commencing a job with Spectrum working with refugees, youth and disability service, Fatima says she hopes to become a Child Protection Officer upon graduation.
