Collaborating with people who have experienced abuse when playing sport as a young person

Express your interest in the project

Have you experienced emotional, physical or sexual abuse when playing sport (at any level) in Australia as a young child or teenager? Would you like to help make community sport safer and more inclusive?

VU researchers from the Safety and Wellbeing Research group are inviting 4-to-6 people who’ve experienced child abuse in Australian sport to join an advisory committee for a collaborative research project.

Valuing lived experience engagement in child safeguarding in sport research

Our research team recently commenced a collaborative research project with the National Centre for Action on Child Sexual Abuse. The project aims to identify strategies to improve community clubs’ response to child abuse in sport and co-develop a framework for the involvement of people with lived experience of abuse in sport in collaborative research projects.

Both the research team and the National Centre for Action on Child Sexual Abuse value social justice and collaborating with those directly impacted by harmful behaviours in sport. The lead researcher Dr Aurélie Pankowiak also has lived experience.

As part of the research team commitment to safety and wellbeing, all researchers have undergone (or will complete by project start) training in trauma-informed care. Ali Quigley, a Lived Experience Advocate, was hired to facilitate the collaboration.
