Thermodynamics 2
Credit points
(Generally, 1 credit = 10 hours of classes and independent study.)
Location
Prerequisites
(Or equivalent to be determined by unit coordinator)
Co-requisites
(Corequisite units must be studied concurrently with this unit)
Overview
This unit focuses on the application of thermodynamic principles to a range of engineering systems, including refrigeration, air-conditioning, engines, power plants, and combustion processes. Students will develop the skills to analyse the performance of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, evaluate various engine cycles, and assess steam power cycles used in large power stations. The unit also covers the development of combustion equations. Students will gain a deeper understanding of these systems and their real-world performance, equipping them with the tools to solve complex thermal energy-related engineering problems.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- Collaboratively analyse refrigeration systems and evaluate the performance of both ideal and actual refrigeration cycles;
- Exhibit understanding of the principles of air-conditioning systems and apply energy and mass balance analyses to assess their performance;
- Analyse the cycles of petrol engines, diesel engines, gas turbines, and jet engines, and assess their performance under both ideal and real conditions;
- Review and analyse steam power cycles, evaluate their performance in large power stations, and recommend improvements for existing systems; and
- Develop combustion equations to calculate air-to-fuel ratios and flame temperatures, applying these principles to engineering practice.
Assessment
For Melbourne campuses
Assessment type: Report | Grade: 20%
Laboratory Experiment and Report on Refrigeration (calculations, sketches) (Group)(1500 words)
Assessment type: Report | Grade: 20%
Laboratory Experiment and Report on Air Conditioning (calculations, sketches) (Group) (1500 words)
Assessment type: Test | Grade: 60%
In-class invigilated test on Thermodynamics and Applications (calculations, theory) (120 mins) (Individual)
Report: Authenticity is ensured through structured laboratory guidelines, clear marking rubrics, and peer assessment for collaborative work. The reports are assessed with emphasis on originality and accuracy of data interpretation.
Test: Security is maintained by conducting the test in an invigilated environment. The test is designed to assess understanding and application of thermodynamics theory and application.
