Co-requisites
(Corequisite units must be studied concurrently with this unit)
Overview
Building on foundational knowledge of structures and force equilibrium from previous units, this unit focuses on analysing the effects of various loading conditions—axial, bending, shear, torsional, and thermal—on mechanical structures and components. Students will apply mathematical techniques and computer simulations to assess stress and strain resulting from these loads. Understanding how different types of loads induce stress and strain is crucial for solving engineering problems. The ability to determine the maximum stress, strain, and their locations is essential for evaluating, optimising, and improving engineering designs.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- Collaborate on and investigate real-world engineering problems related to stress and strain;
- Formulate and evaluate solutions to 3-dimensional stress and strain problems, with a focus on elasticity in mechanical engineering;
- Analyse and interpret stress and strain problems, assess their results, and understand their significance; and
- Present a clear and coherent exposition of mechanical engineering concepts.
Assessment
For Melbourne campuses
Assessment type: Portfolio | Grade: 30%
Real-world engineering problems related to stress and strain analysis. (2000 words) (Group)
Assessment type: Test | Grade: 60%
Test - Mixed mode written and FEA test assesses individual understanding and application of stress and strain principles. (Individual)(120 mins)
Assessment type: Case Study | Grade: 10%
Presentation (Group) (10mins)
Portfolio: The portfolio is reviewed for evidence of individual contributions and teamwork in solving engineering problems. Regular check-ins and feedback from peers and instructors ensure authenticity and fair assessment of individual input. Explicit evaluation of individual contributions further supports the assurance of each student’s achievement of learning outcomes.
Test: Mixed mode written and FEA test is invigilated under controlled conditions to ensure academic integrity. It includes both theoretical questions and practical applications of stress and strain analysis to verify each student's individual understanding.
Case Study: The case study presentation is assessed through group interactions, with each student’s individual contribution evaluated based on the quality of their input and their role in the group project. Unpredictable, structured Q&A sessions following the presentation validate individual learning.
