Overview
This unit develops students' specialised knowledge of being an osteopath in the Australian healthcare system. To facilitate their preparation for undertaking osteopathic clinical placement, students consider legal, cultural, ethical and regulatory requirements of osteopathic practice. Students demonstrate inclusivity by exploring strategies to actively minimise discrimination based on culture, disability/ability, gender, sexuality, age, and other demographic factors. They will reflect on the importance of culturally responsive health care, particularly for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students will also build on knowledge from previous units by using outcome measures to assess patients and guide management decisions.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- Analyse osteopathic workforce data and common practices in the Australian healthcare system;
- Critically reflect on the importance of culturally safe and patient-centred care when working with individuals from diverse backgrounds including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples;
- Evaluate and appraise, both individually and collaboratively, the ethical, inclusivity, legal and regulatory requirements impacting Australian osteopathic practice including when working interprofessionally; and
- Justify the selection and application of outcome measures for patient assessment and management.
