Overview
This unit builds your skills in designing, implementing, and optimising modern computer networks. You will explore advanced switching and routing protocols, develop hands-on experience with Cisco technologies, and apply AI tools to enhance network monitoring and troubleshooting. From LANs to WANs, you will learn how to configure scalable, secure network solutions that meet evolving performance demands. By the end of the unit, you will be able to design and troubleshoot intelligent network infrastructures, preparing you for roles in network administration, support, and engineering.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- Explain the mechanisms, algorithms, and functions of major switching and routing technologies, including the integration of AI-based monitoring tools.
- Design networks using appropriate structures, addressing schemes, and routing protocols, integrating AI tools for optimisation.
- Investigate and troubleshoot network designs for Local Area Networks (LANs), Wide Area Networks (WANs), and the Internet, using industry-standard technologies such as Cisco routers and switches.
- Develop AI-driven diagnostic tools to enhance network troubleshooting and performance analysis; and
- Apply advanced routing techniques and protocols, including IPv6, to optimize network scalability and security.
Assessment
For Melbourne campuses
Assessment type: Test | Grade: 20%
Problem solving on LAN related questions
Assessment type: Assignment | Grade: 40%
Individual Assignment on Local Area Network Design and Wide Area Network Design with Q&A verification.
Assessment type: Case Study | Grade: 40%
Scenario-Based case study on WAN related question with verified live interaction.
Assignment: Includes structured milestone reviews and in-class progress checks. Individual contributions are logged, validated, and justified through recorded peer review or demonstration to ensure authenticity.
Case Study: Students apply concepts to unpredictable data science scenarios. Responses are evaluated based on reasoning, method selection, and outcome justification, with an in-class component or oral defence verifying understanding.
