(Generally, 1 credit = 10 hours of classes and independent study.)
Location
Prerequisites
SOL1004 - Preparing to Lead in Natural Environments; and
SOL3000 - Leading Facilitating and Interpreting in Natural Environments
(Or equivalent to be determined by unit coordinator)
Co-requisites
(Corequisite units must be studied concurrently with this unit)
Overview
In this unit students will consolidate their foundational knowledge and outdoor living and travel skills through an extended field teaching journey in a natural environment. This field teaching will provide students with an opportunity to inquire into the local environment and gain a greater appreciation and understanding of how moving through the natural environment can be observed differently by different people. Students will critically reflect on leadership, facilitation, personal and community development, and interpretation of, and relationships with, the natural environment.
Off campus field teaching in this unit may require a levy for incidental fees for accommodation, transport and camping.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- Exhibit understanding of the importance of a Pre-Trip checklist with consideration to equipment, environment and people;
- Exemplify understanding of human nature relationships through artistic expression and reflective practice;
- Reflect and analyse the use of extended journeys in outdoor environmental education/recreation and with consideration of flora and fauna in the environment of travel; and
- Rationalise appropriate strategies to maintain the physical and psychological well-being of people on extended journeys in natural environments.
Assessment
For Melbourne campuses
Due to risk management and professional/industry requirements to demonstrate knowledge and skill within both simulated and workplace environments, attendance requirements and hurdle tasks apply to field teaching and practicums.

This is due to the unit containing a significant competency component, enabling students to acquire and demonstrate essential skills to meet industry practice (VU Standards for Assessment Procedure (HE) Policy clause 25, 26, 29). Competency is also assessed through successful completion of hurdle practicum assessment.
