Co-requisites
(Corequisite units must be studied concurrently with this unit)
Overview
In this unit, you will explore how engineering design principles, digital modelling tools, and optimisation techniques combine to create practical, efficient, and reliable mechanical systems. You will learn to design, analyse, and refine components using contemporary engineering software, applying your understanding of mechanics, tolerance, and fit to achieve precision and performance. Through an authentic design challenge that reflects industry practice, you will solve real-world engineering problems that balance manufacturability, cost, and quality.
By the end of this unit, you will be able to model and test mechanical designs, interpret engineering drawings, and communicate professional solutions within a collaborative team environment—skills essential for success in modern mechanical engineering.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
Apply engineering design principles and scientific reasoning to design, select, and optimise mechanical components for manufacturability;
Develop accurate 3D models and engineering drawings using digital design tools aligned with industry standards;
Evaluate structural performance and manufacturability using simulation and optimisation software;
Design and justify manufacturable engineering solutions that balance performance and cost; and
Collaborate effectively in diverse teams to design and present manufacturing solutions through professional technical communication.
Assessment
For Melbourne campuses
Assessment type: Portfolio | Grade: 40%
Design challenge portfolio including measurement and drawing exercises, presentations and a written report (Group) (2500 words)
Assessment type: Test | Grade: 50%
Design challenge skills and associated fundamentals (Individual) (120 mins)
Assessment type: Test | Grade: 10%
Computer-based solid modelling (CAD) (Individual) (90 mins)
Portfolio: This assessment requires students to document design processes, demonstrate practical skills, and present work individually and collaboratively. Progressive milestone checks including a progress presentation, measurement and drawing exercises are designed for students to receive structured feedback, supporting development of individual and collaboration skills and monitoring individual contributions and progress. Students are required to progressively submit these milestone tasks for grading and feedback prior to the finalisation of their grade.
Test: This secure assessment evaluates individual understanding of design challenge concepts and fundamental principles under supervised conditions. Invigilation and structured questioning ensure authenticity and achievement of learning outcomes.
Test: This secure assessment requires students to demonstrate solid modelling skills. Real-time observation and assessment of task completion verify competence and application of industry-standard CAD techniques.
