IT Capstone Project 2
Credit points
(Generally, 1 credit = 10 hours of classes and independent study.)
Location
VU Brisbane
VU Sydney
Prerequisites
(Or equivalent to be determined by unit coordinator)
Co-requisites
(Corequisite units must be studied concurrently with this unit)
Overview
In this unit you will experience the final phase of your capstone project, where you’ll deliver and demonstrate a complete IT solution that meets stakeholder needs. Building on your earlier planning and design, you’ll implement, test, and evaluate your system while producing technical documentation and user support materials. You’ll evaluate and apply AI-supported tools where appropriate to boost efficiency, enhance system quality, and support professional documentation. By the end of the unit, you’ll be able to deliver professional-grade IT systems, justify your technical decisions, and communicate outcomes to diverse audiences, preparing you for graduate roles or further professional practice.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- Design a complete IT system that addresses real-world problems with AI-powered development tools and services where appropriate;
- Evaluate software components including AI-generated code for functionality, performance, security and alignment with requirements;
- Justify solutions using experimental results, stakeholder feedback, explainability analyses, and defined performance criteria;
- Collaborate in the creation of technical and professional documentation, including manuals, reports, and presentation materials;
- Exhibit the system to technical and non-technical audiences, using professional, ethical, and inclusive practices;
Assessment
For Melbourne campuses
Assessment type: Journal | Grade: 10%
Progress report (team-based assessment)
Assessment type: Report | Grade: 70%
Final system delivery: includes programming code, analysis report, user manual, and project poster (Team-based assessment) with Q&A verification
Assessment type: Presentation | Grade: 20%
Oral presentation: demonstrate and defend the project outcomes to the relevant audience (Group) with Q&A verification.
Team-based assessment in the IT Capstone Project follows these guidelines:
- Team Size: Each team should consist of 2 to 4 students.
- Project Variety: Different teams will work on distinct capstone projects.
- Individual Responsibilities: Within a team, each student will be assigned specific parts of the capstone project and will collaborate with teammates, reflecting real-world industrial project dynamics.
- Individual Assessment: Each student's performance will be evaluated individually, considering their assigned responsibilities and contributions to the project.
Journal: Student teams submit progress reports documenting the development of their IT system, tracking implementation milestones, and reflecting on contributions.
Report: Students analyse real data and produce findings in written form, supported by oral presentation or follow-up Q&A verifying interpretations and methods. AI-generated content is flagged via reflective process documentation.
Presentation: Students present technical insights or project findings in real-time, followed by a Q&A session. Understanding is verified via unpredictable questions requiring explanation of methods, assumptions, and decisions.
