(Or equivalent to be determined by unit coordinator)
Co-requisites
(Corequisite units must be studied concurrently with this unit)
Overview
In this unit, you will develop skills to design, build, and deploy secure, scalable cloud applications on industry-standard cloud platforms. Through hands-on labs and AI-assisted tools, you will explore automation, virtualisation, and sustainability in cloud environments. Emphasis is placed on ethical and societal impacts of cloud technologies. By the end of the unit, you will be ready for roles in cloud engineering, DevOps, and AI-driven software development.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- Contextualise understanding of core cloud computing concepts, architectures, and service models, including the role of AI in modern cloud ecosystems.;
- Integrate industry-standard cloud platforms, tools, and AI-assisted development environments to design, implement, and deploy secure and scalable cloud applications.
- Analyse the use of cloud technologies across sectors and evaluate their performance, sustainability, and social impact, including ethical considerations in AI-powered cloud solutions.
Assessment
For Melbourne campuses
Assessment type: Test | Grade: 20%
Scenario based problem solving test
Assessment type: Laboratory Work | Grade: 40%
Web Application design and implementation
Assessment type: Assignment | Grade: 40%
Develop cloud-based application
Laboratory Work: Conducted under supervision, students complete real-time data analysis, coding, or modelling tasks. Execution is observed, and outcomes are verified through live checks or oral Q&A to ensure individual performance.
Assignment: Includes structured milestone reviews and in-class progress checks. Individual contributions are logged, validated, and justified through recorded peer review or demonstration to ensure authenticity.
Other locations
Assessment type: Test | Grade: 20%
Scenario based problem solving test
Assessment type: Assignment | Grade: 30%
Develop cloud-based application with demonstration and Q&A verification.
Assessment type: Examination | Grade: 50%
Invigilated final written examination
Assignment: Includes structured milestone reviews and in-class progress checks. Individual contributions are logged, validated, and justified through recorded peer review or demonstration to ensure authenticity. Examination: Invigilated, time-bound exam includes unseen data sets or problem types. Students must demonstrate deep understanding by explaining reasoning, performing analysis, and applying concepts to new contexts.
Required reading
Selected readings will be made available via VU Collaborate.
