Overview
This unit is structured to provide students with knowledge and skills in managing services within commercial and industrial buildings, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, Australian Standards, and the National Construction Code (NCC) of Australia. It focuses on energy-efficient design principles across various systems, including heating, ventilation, air-conditioning (HVAC), vertical transport, fire protection, water management, and building energy management systems (BEMS). Students will gain insights into selecting appropriate mechanical systems and integrating technologies to enhance building efficiency, quality, and sustainability.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- Investigate and rationalise principles of systems management in commercial and industrial buildings;
- Analyse and assess design documentation and building services for commercial and industrial buildings for compliance with the various statutes, codes and standards;
- Articulate the importance of building services maintenance and management in terms of function, procedures and operations;
- Validate service installations in commercial and industrial buildings; and
- Critically review the implications of energy-efficient design principles upon building services design and apply appropriate energy budgets.
Assessment
For Melbourne campuses
Assessment type: Test | Grade: 20%
Two Tests (10% each) (Individual)
Assessment type: Assignment | Grade: 40%
Assignment (Individual)
Assessment type: Project | Grade: 40%
Project and oral presentation (Group)
The two open book tests, consisting of short descriptive answers, assess students' knowledge of design, management, and energy efficiency principles across different building service systems.
In the individual assignment, students analyse the design procedure for the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems for a building.
In the group project and oral presentation, students interpret the design and installation principles of various building services, including vertical transportation, fire protection, and water management systems.
The project includes an evaluation of the contributions made by each member of the team to facilitate the assessment of students' achievement of learning outcomes. (Group 60%, Individual 40%)
