Overview
Biomedical Sciences for Osteopathy 3 extends students’ knowledge of biomedical sciences. Students explore previously learnt concepts of anatomy and physiology, in conjunction with introducing pathology, pharmacology, embryology, pain science, tissue injury and exercise rehabilitation. This will enable students to develop a more in depth understanding of how these principles relate to osteopathic practice. The complex phenomenon of pain is introduced in this unit, forming a crucial underlying concept for subsequent osteopathy units.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- Review principles and processes of cellular and vascular pathology, inflammation and tissue repair and apply them to clinical scenarios;
- Compare and contrast the types and management of nerve injuries and their relation to pain science and the biopsychosocial model;
- Outline human embryological development; and
- Apply knowledge and understanding of pharmacological and rehabilitation principles within the healthcare setting both independently and collaboratively.
Assessment
For Melbourne campuses
The individual worksheets aim to consolidate fundamental pathophysiology knowledge presented within weeks 1 and 2 of this unit. The case study assessment is conducted in small groups where students synthesise information from a patient scenario in relation to relevant topics covered within the unit and undertake a verbal presentation of the case analysis. Students will also complete an invigilated short answer task to provide assurance of each student’s achievement of learning outcomes. The full scope of the HBO1003 curriculum will be assessed by the final test, which is scaffolded by formative quizzes throughout the unit.
Assessment type: Assignment | Grade: 20%
