Prerequisites

NIT1202 - Operating Systems
(Or equivalent to be determined by unit coordinator)
Co-requisites
(Corequisite units must be studied concurrently with this unit)

Overview

This unit bridges the gap between traditional server management and cutting-edge AI-driven automation tools. It covers essential aspects of database management, operating system, system management, network management, and software administration. Additionally, you will learn how to utilise AI to optimise database performance, automate system monitoring, and manage backups efficiently. By the end of this unit, you will be able to deploy and manage modern server infrastructures autonomously, ensuring both performance and security in increasingly complex environments.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Evaluate the role of AI-driven tools in database, system, and network management.
  2. Design functional server operation solutions with AI-driven tools to effectively manage a stable, small-scale networked environment.
  3. Develop AI-based solutions for automatic performance tuning, backup scheduling, and troubleshooting.
  4. Optimise server performance using AI-based tools to identify bottlenecks, improve resource utilisation, and enhance system availability.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment type: Laboratory Work | Grade: 20%

Practical lab work

Assessment type: Assignment | Grade: 50%

Server automation project with presentation, demonstration and Q&A verification.

Assessment type: Case Study | Grade: 30%

Assignment:
Includes structured milestone reviews and in-class progress checks. Individual contributions are logged, validated, and justified through recorded peer review or demonstration to ensure authenticity.

Other locations

Assessment type: Laboratory Work | Grade: 20%

Practical lab report

Assessment type: Assignment | Grade: 30%

Server automation project with presentation, demonstration and Q&A verification.

Assessment type: Examination | Grade: 50%

Invigilated Final Written Examination

Assignment: Includes structured milestone reviews and in-class progress checks. Individual contributions are logged, validated, and justified through recorded peer review or demonstration to ensure authenticity. Examination: Invigilated, time-bound exam includes unseen data sets or problem types. Students must demonstrate deep understanding by explaining reasoning, performing analysis, and applying concepts to new contexts.
