The cost of catching public transport to class can add up fast. If you’re eligible, setting up your student myki concession card is one of the easiest ways to save money during your studies.

Using MyVU, here’s how to get your student myki – officially called a Transport Victoria tertiary concession card.

How to apply for a student myki concession card through VU

: Before you apply, make sure your digital VU student ID is ready in the VU App. VU will use your digital ID photo for your public transport concession form.
: Log in to MyVU and select "request a public transport concession card".
Check your details and submit your request. VU will pre-fill the application form and then send it to your VU student email address.
: Print the completed form and photo (generated automatically from your student ID) and take it to a staffed train station to receive your Transport Victoria tertiary concession card.
: Once your card is sorted, purchase, top up and use a concession myki for eligible travel – and you'll enjoy 50% off compared to full fare mykis.

Who can get a student myki concession card?

You may be eligible if you:

are enrolled full-time in an approved course
are an Australian citizen, permanent resident, refugee or exchange student
are studying a course that is 10 weeks or longer.

You’re not eligible if you’re a:

postgraduate student
international full-fee student
apprentice
part-time student
off-campus student.

Common questions about student mykis

: No. Your VU student ID is your university ID. Your Transport Victoria tertiary concession card is the card that gives you access to concession myki fares. You need to apply in MyVU and take the printed application form to a staffed train station or PTV hub to receive your tertiary concession card.
: Yes. Transport Victoria’s concession rules require you to carry proof of your concession when travelling on concession fares. You can be fined if you can't show this proof if you get checked by a ticket inspector.
: If you already have a Victorian Health Care Card, you don’t need to apply for a tertiary concession card. If you have a Centrelink-issued Health Care Card (with a Victorian address), you can use it to purchase general concession tickets on public transport.
: Maybe. If you’re an eligible international student (including New Zealand citizens), you can apply for the International Student Travel Pass (ISTP) instead of the local tertiary concession card. be enrolled in a full-time course (48 credit points per semester)
studying a bachelor's (including honours), diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree
have over 6 months (more than one semester) of full-time study left to complete your course
have a valid VU student card
have an active VU student email account

If you are here as part of a student exchange or study abroad program, you are not eligible for this travel discount.
: No. Public transport users aged between five and 17 can travel for free in Victoria with a Youth myki. Keep in mind, you still need to purchase a registered Youth myki for a one-time $5 fee.
: Yes, you can use a Mobile myki on your Android phone instead of a physical card, allowing you to tap on/off on all Melbourne trains, trams, and buses, as well as V/Line services. It requires NFC to be enabled and you must use the PTV or Google Wallet app to add it.
Unfortunately, there is currently no official Apple Wallet (iPhone) version available.
: A physical concession myki card costs $3 to purchase. A digital mobile myki on Android devices is free, but still requires a minimum top-up balance to travel.
