Artists honour women on WWI home front

Three artists will mark ANZAC Day with an art exhibition honouring the women on the home front during World War I.

Women Wept, an exhibition of photos, textiles, and multimedia works, will open next week at VU at MetroWest.

It tells the stories of the sadness, courage and pain endured by the mothers, sisters, brides and friends of the men who went to war.

Photomedia artists Karenne Ann and Tamara Watt, and textile artist Heather Horrocks, came together to look at war and its impact on the women left at home.

Devised by Heather, curated by Tamara, and shepherded by Karenne, the artists are decades apart in age.

Collectively and individually, they ask how women of that time coped with the grief, death and damaged soldiers who came streaming home from Gallipoli and other campaigns in the aftermath of World War I.

Federal MP for Gellibrand Tim Watts will open the exhibition this Wednesday evening, which will also feature a discussion by the three artists. 

The exhibition will run until 10 May 2016 at VU at MetroWest (138 Nicholson Street, Footscray).

The project is funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Veteran’s Affairs.
