Academic Writing Workshops

Strengthen your academic writing skills with a series of Learning Hub workshops delivered face-to-face. Engage directly with facilitators, participate in discussions, and learn with fellow students in a collaborative environment. 

Overview of academic writing

This workshop introduces and showcases the key features of academic writing and unpacks what makes a fantastic piece of academic writing. You will learn how to:

• maintain objectivity in your writing and develop your own academic voice
• map out a basic essay structure
• use the TEEEL model to help build your academic paragraphs
• maintain academic integrity and avoid plagiarism.

Planning your academic writing

This workshop takes you through unpacking your assignment question and interpreting your rubric to ensure you address what is being asked of you. Spending time planning your academic assignment will save you a whole lot of time when it comes to writing. You will learn how to:

• define task words and look for information that will help you tailor your response to requirements
• draw up a checklist from the rubric which provides instruction on what to include and how to achieve excellent marks
• do your research – when and where.

Writing academic assignments

This workshop goes into detail on how to communicate your ideas and research through a well-structured essay. With opportunities to try embedding evidence and paraphrasing, this workshop will help you take your assignments from 'good' to 'great'. You will understand:

• the writing process for effective academic writing at university
• how to incorporate academic resources into your assignments
• the importance of paraphrasing
• the essentials of effective paraphrasing and how to express ideas in your own words while maintaining academic integrity.
