Join us for the second Jean McLean Oration, a biennial event that honours the distinguished career of The Hon. Jean McLean AM as a politician and an activist.

This year, Professor Amin Saikal AM, FASSA – Emeritus Professor of Middle Eastern and Central Asian Studies at the Australian National University and Adjunct Professor of Social Sciences at the University of Western Australia – will deliver the Oration.

Amin will take us on a journey through the pages of history and delve into the enigmatic puzzle of America's struggles in Third World conflicts. He will unravel the common factors underpinning America’s losses – from the trauma of Vietnam to the complexities of Iraq and Afghanistan.

In this lecture, discover the hidden threads that tie these seemingly disparate conflicts together and gain fresh insights into the elements that have led to what can only be described as "adventurous fiascos".

: Professor Amin Saikal AM, FASSA is a distinguished academic with a wealth of experience in international relations and Middle Eastern studies.

He is Emeritus Professor and Founding Director of the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies (the Middle East and Central Asia) at the Australian National University (ANU); Adjunct Professor of Social Sciences at the University of Western Australia; and Distinguished Visiting Fellow at S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
: The Hon. Jean Mclean has had a prominent and sometimes controversial career as a politician and as an activist in support of a broad range of high-profile public causes.

This biennial Oration was created to honour her distinguished career and contributions to public life, particularly to Timor-Leste and the Save Our Sons movement.
