Overview

This unit of competency covers applying welding principles to meet the statutory and regulatory requirements for welding procedures generally associated with the application of one of the units satisfying Australian Standard 1796 Certificates 1-9.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • interpreting welding specifications including terms, codes and symbols, and;
  • planning the sequence of welding operations

Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:

  • any applicable industry standards, national/Australian standards, NOHSC guidelines, state/territory regulatory codes of practice/standards for the applicable welding processes;
  • safe work practices and procedures;
  • hazards related to welding;
  • safety equipment and procedures related to welding activities;
  • welding terminology;
  • welding codes and symbols;
  • heat treatment processes;
  • logical sequence for welding processes;
  • tools, equipment, techniques used in welding, and;
  • effect of heat treatment on metal.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of Victoria Polytechnic produced workbooks.

As part of a course

This unit is not compulsory for any specific course. Depending on the course you study, this unit may be taken as an elective.
