The conference Melbourne 2050: How will we cope with 8 million people? was held 6-7 August 2015.

Melbourne is routinely named the world’s most liveable city – is it for all who reside and visit here? How will we cope with a projected population growth of 8 million people by 2050?

The aim of this conference was to engage with experts in their respective fields to examine a number of issues facing Melbourne throughout this time of intense population growth. This conference will provide us with the knowledge and tools to ensure that we remain the world’s most liveable city in 2050 and beyond.

Themes

The conference debates and discussions covered the themes of:

  • What will Melbourne look like in 2050?
  • How do we plan for 2050 while also planning for population growth in the short term and dealing with the effect of urban sprawl?
  • The social wellbeing of Melbourne’s residents and how we can be a world leader in ensuring an inclusive and harmonious big city.
  • How we can ensure that Melbourne is at the forefront in creating healthy and green cities.
  • The opportunities and challenges for innovation and creativity in Melbourne.
