Overview

This unit of competency covers using hand and power tools in applications relating to furniture making.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following skills:

  • locate and apply relevant information related to hand power tools;
  • apply safe handling requirements for equipment, products and materials, including use of personal protective equipment;
  • identify materials used in the work process;
  • follow work instructions, operating procedures and inspection processes to: minimise the risk of injury to self or others; prevent damage to goods, equipment and products; maintain required production output and product quality;
  • adopt and carry out correct procedures prior to and during use of the range of hand and power tools stipulated in the Range of Conditions;
  • carry out operator maintenance on hand and power tools, including the grinding and sharpening of: chisels; hard plane blades or irons; drill bits;
  • use mathematical ideas and techniques to correctly complete measurements, calculate area and estimate material requirements;
  • communicate ideas and information to enable confirmation of work requirements and specifications and the reporting of work outcomes and problems, interpret basic plans and follow safety procedures;
  • minimise wastage of resources including materials, time and money, and;
  • work with others and in a team by recognising dependencies and using cooperative approaches to optimise work flow and productivity.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the Polytechnic and/or via the Polytechnic e-learning system.

As part of a course

This unit is not compulsory for any specific course. Depending on the course you study, this unit may be taken as an elective.
