Overview

This unit covers using a range of hand tools for a variety of
general engineering applications.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • reading and following information on standard operating procedures;
  • following verbal instructions;
  • selecting hand tools appropriate to the task;
  • using hand tools safely;
  • identifying hand tool defects and marking for repair;
  • maintaining/sharpening hand tools using appropriate techniques, and;
  • storing hand tools in accordance with manufacturers'/standard operating procedures.

Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:

  • applications of different hand tools in a general engineering context;
  • common faults and/or defects in hand tools;
  • procedures for marking unsafe or faulty tools for repair;
  • routine maintenance requirements for a range of hand tools;
  • storage location and procedures for a range of hand tools;
  • hazards and control measures associated with using hand tools;
  • use and application of personal protective equipment, and;
  • safe work practices and procedures.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the Polytechnic and/or via the Polytechnic e-learning system.

As part of a course

This unit is not compulsory for any specific course. Depending on the course you study, this unit may be taken as an elective.
