This strand is designed for educators who teach English language learners (ELLs) in a designated second language classroom, sheltered classroom, or in any subject-area classroom. The Write Path English Language Learners Teacher Guide (provided to participants) focuses on providing the skills necessary for ELL students to successfully navigate rigorous curriculum. Activities focus on Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR); scaffolding for the various levels of ELL students across different content areas; and academic language building through multiple modalities: modelling, bridging, schema-building, metacognitive development, and contextualization.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. gain an understanding of how AVID concepts and methodologies can be applied to the designated second language classroom, sheltered classroom, or in any subject-area classroom; and  
  2. use strategies and activities to support rigorous instruction for ELL students e.g. Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR); scaffolding for the various levels of ELL students across different content areas; and academic language building through multiple modalities: modelling, bridging, schema-building, metacognitive development, and contextualization.
