This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to retrieve and manipulate information stored in information systems, using a query language.  It applies to individuals in a range of work environments, who are required to extract information from a source such as a database, a text file, or an extensible markup language (XML), by creating and running queries.

Assessment

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines. Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills: - select and use tools in developing, storing, and executing queries to extract the appropriate data required for ad hoc reports, or to support developers, and; - incorporate calculations using control statements, operators and functions.Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge: - outline the information gathering methods; - outline the data analysis techniques; - define data mining; - outline the characteristics of the data source; - explain the features of the information system, and; - explain typical systems and procedures.
