This unit describes the skills and knowledge to interpret and use routine maps and plans using direction, simple scales, labels, symbols and keys.  This unit applies to individuals who need numeracy skills at Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) level 3 to undertake a vocational training pathway or workplace tasks.  This unit is designed for integration and contextualisation with vocational units to support achievement of vocational competency.

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines. Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills: - locate items on routine map or plan; - orient to a routine map or plan to locate an item in real life; - give directions to locate an item or place on a routine map or plan; - follow directions to locate an item or place on a routine map or plan, and; - estimate length or distance between two objects or locations.Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge: - features on maps and/or plans; - symbols on routine maps and plans, and; - location of north, south, east and west.
