Overview

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to plan and organise individual and group work activities on a construction site. The unit includes identifying task requirements, planning steps and organising work.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • communication skills to: determine or confirm and clarify task requirements; enable clear and direct communication, using questioning to identify and confirm requirements, share information, listen and understand;
  • plan steps and organise work activities with others;
  • use language and concepts appropriate to cultural differences;
  • use and interpret non-verbal communication, such as hand signals;
  • written skills to complete workplace documentation;
  • evaluating own actions and make judgements about performance and necessary improvements;
  • identifying and accurately reporting to appropriate personnel any faults in tools, equipment or materials;
  • interpret information relevant to the work activity including plans, specifications and drawings and documentation from a variety of sources;
  • teamwork skills to work with others to action tasks and relate to people from a range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds and with varying physical and mental abilities;
  • use a range of mobile technology, such as two-way radio and mobile phones; voice and hand signals to access and understand site-specific instructions;
  • using time management techniques to organise and prioritise work.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the Polytechnic and/or via the Polytechnic e-learning system.

As part of a course

This unit is not compulsory for any specific course. Depending on the course you study, this unit may be taken as an elective.
