Overview

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to conduct
levelling procedures using the rise and fall method and the height of
instrument method for the purpose of establishing correct and accurate
set out of buildings, their components and preparation. It includes the
set up, testing and use of levelling devices and undertaking closed
traverses using a range of levelling equipment.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • communication skills to: determine requirements; enable clear and direct communication, using questioning to identify and confirm requirements, share information, listen and understand; follow instructions;
  • read and interpret: documentation from a variety of sources; plans, specifications and drawings;
  • report faults;
  • use language and concepts appropriate to cultural differences;
  • use and interpret non-verbal communication, such as hand signals;
  • numeracy skills to apply measurements and make calculations;
  • organisational skills, including the ability to plan and set out work;
  • teamwork skills to work with others to action tasks and relate to people from a range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds and with varying physical and mental abilities, and;
  • use a range of mobile technology, such as two-way radio and mobile phones; voice and hand signals to access and understand site-specific instructions.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the Polytechnic and/or via the Polytechnic e-learning system.

As part of a course

This unit is not compulsory for any specific course. Depending on the course you study, this unit may be taken as an elective.
