This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and apply knowledge of library and information services and/or the cultural industry sectors of museums and galleries, and maintain its currency.  It applies to individuals who are working in or seeking work in organisations providing library and information services and/or galleries and museums, and who work autonomously according to established procedures.

Assessment

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines. Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills: - source, assess and evaluate a range of information for the relevant industry sector; - explain value and principles of relevant industry sector, and how they relate to funding and service delivery; - recognise legislation relevant to the workplace and ethical issues; - identify major industry trends and technology developments, and; - identify a career path.Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge: - identify sources of information on library and information services and/or cultural industry sectors of museums and galleries; - outline historical development of relevant industry sectors; - explain underpinning values, principles and philosophies of the relevant industry sectors; - identify legislation and ethical practices impacting the relevant industry sectors; - outline career opportunities and career pathways in the relevant industry sectors; - discuss current trends within the relevant industry sectors and the potential impacts and opportunities they present; - explain the nature, role and functions of relevant major professional associations or industry bodies, and; - discuss employee and employer obligations.
