VU Law student learn in the workplace

Michael Kirby

So I think the initiatives of Victoria University in providing for in-office and in-court internship are very important and it’s an opportunity to be grasped because this is the way you see the law from inside and how busy and accomplished practitioners do the job.

VU students come from diverse backgrounds

Michael Kirby

On the whole it’s a good thing to make sure that law, serving all the people attracts to its number those who have come from the people and the variety of backgrounds of Australian citizens today and in that respect I think a Law School like Victoria University Law School does better than many.

My advice to future lawyers

Michael Kirby

To be a joiner. To join in civil society, to join the Council for Civil Liberties or the equivalent body in your state, to join Amnesty International. To be involved with the world, not be just somebody who is selfishly looking after yourself, and not concerned with the world around you in your own community in Australia.
