Julia Gillard and Michael Kirby on education and opportunity - transcript

The Honorable Julia Gillard

From my own family background the difference an education makes, a good education makes, is really clear to me.

My parents, both of them for different reasons, weren’t able to get a good education and so they were always wistful about what they could have become if they got to finish school and go on to university and really the lesson for my lifetime because I had that opportunity my life has been very different to theirs.

The Honorable Michael Kirby

Julia Gillard after having served as our 27th Prime Minister, went out into the world, went to the Brookings Institute in the United States, reached out to a bigger universe, and is dedicated to education worldwide.

The Honorable Julia Gillard

Having been a representative of Melbourne’s west in the Federal Parliament I have seen so many people whose lives have been transformed by education, and actually by an education at Victoria University because of its deep roots and outreach in that community.

Victoria University couldn’t have been kinder to me, but I think that is because we have a mutual love affair, and our mutual love affair comes from the fact that we have reached out to and engaged people who come from non-privileged backgrounds.

When I went to university all those years ago, there were some big government cutbacks to education and so I got involved in campaigning against them and the rest as they say is history.

But coming out of all of that, active politics, I thought what can I do that will continue that support for education, so now I get to chair this global body called Global Partnership for Education and it is the bigger multilateral that is trying to make sure that children in the poorest parts of the world get to go to school.

The Honorable Michael Kirby

Education is everybody’s birthright and we Australians have to contribute generously to make sure that is a promise of the universal declaration of Human Rights that is actually delivered.
