"I came to Melbourne from Germany four years ago with my husband-to-be for a holiday. Just before we started travelling around Australia our campervan with all our belongings was stolen – we had to rethink our plans, and decided to stay and continue with our studies.
I had started a mechanical engineering degree in Berlin and enrolled at VU to continue my studies because it was the only university to credit much of my overseas education.
For my final year project, I worked at a solar desalination plant in Rockingham WA on a project that has the potential to provide safe drinking water to remote communities and developing countries. I worked with researchers and industry leaders with extensive water industry experience.
One week after graduation I got a job offer as a project engineer in a private engineering consultancy in Sydney. My experience in Rockingham made a big impression on my employer, which helped me stand out from the other candidates."
