STORY WRITING IN REMOTE LOCATIONS (SWIRL)

Story Writing in Remote Locations (SWIRL) is a literacy re-engagement program which has been running in remote Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory since 1995. Pre-service teachers from Victoria University undertake a placement in these remote communities and work with children to support them in writing their own stories.

The idea for SWIRL came about when founder Lawry Mahon realised how the texts children were reading in schools did not represent their lives. He saw the opportunity for them to create their own books of their experiences and cultures which included photos and artworks of their stories. The children keep a copy of any book they create and a copy is put in the library. Hundreds of VU graduate teachers now call themselves SWIRLers and many of them return to the NT to teach.
