These assessments are conducted by VU Consortium partners TAFESA [RTO 41026] or TasTAFE [RTO 60142]:

Motor mechanic occupations

A person who works in Australia as a Motor Mechanic – General (ANZSCO code: 321211) repairs, maintains and tests vehicle or other engines and related mechanical components.

Specific tasks include:

  • diagnose faults in motor vehicles
  • raise vehicles, using hydraulic hoists or jacks
  • dismantle or remove engine assemblies, transmissions, steering mechanisms or other components, and check parts
  • repair or replace worn or defective parts, and reassemble mechanical components
  • test and adjust repaired sub-assemblies, and re-install them
  • service or overhaul engines
  • tune engines to achieve smoother running and ensure compliance with pollution regulations
  • re-line and adjust brakes and align wheels
  • change oil and filters, and lubricate vehicles or fuelled motor appliances
  • inspect vehicles and issue roadworthiness certificates
  • detail work required to achieve roadworthiness.

Practical skills demonstration

Skills assessments will be conducted through Victoria University’s partner institutes TAFESA in South Australia or India, or TasTAFE in Tasmania, for candidates requiring a practical assessment in the following automotive trades:

  • Automotive Electrician (ANZSCO code: 321111)
  • Motor Mechanic – General (ANZSCO code: 321213).
