About Kokum Weeratunga

Kokum is a Data Scientist with VU’s Institute for Health & Sport and is part of the research collaboration with Tennis Australia known as the Game Insight Group (GIG).

His research background is in image processing, computer vision and machine learning, currently focusing on developing unobtrusive data gathering methods in order to collect information related to athletic performance.

Prior to his current appointment, he was with the Malaysian Sports Institute in a sports technology research role.He has over 10 years of experience working with elite sports at Olympic, World and Commonwealth levels including badminton, squash, and track cycling.

Kokum was the tactical analyst for Malaysia Badminton in the 4 years leading up to the London Olympic Games and was the lead tactical analyst for the Malaysian contingent at the 2012 London Games. After the Olympics, Kokum completed his PhD at Monash University in computer vision and pattern recognition. As a part of this research role he focused on applying computer vision and machine learning to automate tactical analysis in badminton.

Due to the cross disciplinary applied nature of his professional experience, Kokum maintains an interest in applying engineering and computer science in elite sporting environments.
