  1. By entering the Picturing Footscray Photography Prize (Promotion), you agree to the following terms and conditions:
  2. The Promoter is Victoria University (VU) (ABN: 83 776 954 731, CRICOS Provider No. 00124K) PO Box 14428, Melbourne, Victoria 8001.
  3. All information on 'how to enter' forms part of these terms and conditions. By entering into the Promotion, you warrant that you have read, understood and agree to be bound by the terms and conditions.
  4. The Promotion commences on Monday 22 August 2022 at 09.00am AEST and closes on Sunday 2 October 2022 at 12.00pm AEST (Promotion Period). Any entry that is not received during the Promotion Period will be invalid.


  1. The Promotion is open to Australian residents aged 18 and over.
  2. Entrants must be individuals and not companies or other entities. Employees and immediate family members of VU and associated agencies any way involved in the Promotion are not valid entrants in the Promotion.
  3. You may enter the Promotion once only.
  4. Entries (Artwork) to the Promotion must:
  • be an original photographic work, completed and owned by the submitting photographer; and
  • be taken in Footscray no earlier than June 2021.
  1. Entries submitted to any previous Picturing Footscray Photography Prize may not be submitted in the Promotion.
  2. Incomplete, illegible or incorrect entries, or entries containing offensive or defamatory imagery, or which breach any law or infringe any third-party rights, including intellectual property rights, will not be eligible to win or be displayed.
  3. Previous winners of the Promotion (excluding previous winners of the People’s Choice Award) will not be eligible to win any prize category except the People’s Choice Award.
  4. To be eligible for the student prize, entrants must be currently enrolled at an Australian tertiary institution and present a valid student ID card upon request.

How to enter

  1. To enter the Promotion entrants must:
  • Submit an eligible photograph that celebrates the unique characteristics of Footscray in Melbourne’s inner west. Entries can include analogue and digital photography, but must be either taken within suburb boundaries, or be of the suburb taken from elsewhere. Map of Footscray boundaries can be viewed here; and
  • Submit a completed entry form via the online entry platform that includes a digital image of the photograph (maximum file size accepted is 5mB (5000KB)) by the close date. Changes to artwork names, dimensions, mediums or dates will not be accepted after entry form is submitted.
  1. Entrants will receive a confirmation email once an entry is submitted online.
  2. VU will review all entries to ensure that they are eligible for exhibition and ineligible entrants will be notified.


  1. There will be five (5) prize categories: a first, second, third and student prize winner, as well as a People's Choice Award selected from the valid entries. The same entry is able to win multiple prizes.
  2. The first, second, third and student prize winners will be selected on the basis of their entry best capturing the character and personality of Footscray, as judged by the judge/s.
  3. VU will announce the first, second, third and student prize winners at the exhibition opening on Thursday 13 October 2022. Winners will be contacted via email and have their names published online at vu.edu.au/community on VU social media channels.
  4. The People's Choice Award will be selected at the end of the exhibition period based on votes through an online platform. The work that receives the most votes will be the people’s choice award winner.
  5. The People's Choice Award winner will be notified at the end of the exhibition, once the votes have been tallied. They will be contacted by email and their name published online at  vu.edu.au/community and on VU social media channels.
  6. Winners (excluding People’s Choice) will be contacted by email and follow up phone call for prize delivery. If a winner has not made contact by 27 October 2022 the winner will forfeit the prize.
  7. People’s Choice winner will be contacted when online voting closes on 11 November 2022.
  8. No prizes can be collected unless the winner provides photo proof of identity, which is satisfactory to VU.
  9. Student prize recipient must show valid student ID satisfactory to VU to claim the prize.


  1. The exhibitions for all eligible entries will be held physically and online (“the Exhibition”). 
  2. The Exhibitions will run from Thursday 13 October – Friday 11 November 2022.
  3. The online exhibition will display all eligible entries and will be the platform for voting of the People's Choice Award.
  4. Only Artworks exhibited in the physical Exhibition are eligible to win the first, second, third and student prizes.
  5. The physical exhibition will be held at the Footscray Connectivity Centre, 138 Nicholson Street Footscray. Only entries exhibited physically are eligible to win the first, second, third and student prizes.
  6. To be exhibited in the physical exhibition entrants must create a physical work which can be displayed.
  7. Works must not exceed 80x80cm (this includes frames and/or series). Works above this size will not be exhibited.
  8. All works must be delivered ready for installation. VU will only display works that can be hung using the following methods: pins or blu-tack attached to prints, frames/canvas/lightboxes with D-rings or wire, mounted prints with batons, prints mounted on foam core.
  9. VU will contact eligible entrants for physical exhibit by Friday 30 September 2022. The works of these entrants will be shown unless deemed too fragile, dangerous or not ready for installation.
  10. Works must be delivered to the Footscray Connectivity Centre at 138 Nicholson Street, Footscray between 9am-5pm Monday 3 and Monday 10 October 2022 (excluding Saturday and Sunday). Works must be clearly labelled with the artists name, title of the work, and contact details.
  11. Entrants take all responsibility for the transport of their work to and from the Footscray Connectivity Centre.
  12. Entries must be collected from the Footscray Connectivity Centre within one (1) week following the end of the exhibition. Any uncollected works will be disposed of at VU’s discretion.
  13. All care will be taken, however VU will not be responsible for any loss or damage to any works howsoever caused.
  14. VU may choose to print a limited number of Artworks to be displayed as street art posters around Melbourne’s inner west (“the Poster Exhibition”).
  15. In order for an Artwork to be eligible for the Poster Exhibition, it must comply with certain guidelines (“Guidelines for Poster Exhibition”), as set out in clause 42.
  16. Artworks for display in the Poster Exhibition (if applicable) will be chosen at VU’s discretion. VU’s decision will be final, and no correspondence or discussions will be entered into.  
  17. The Guidelines for Poster Exhibition also apply to the publishing of any Artworks outside of the Exhibition, including on social media, websites and marketing and promotional materials (including the winning Artworks).
  18. Guidelines for Poster Exhibition:
    • VU is bound by the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014.
    • This Act requires that in order for VU publish an Artwork containing the recognisable likeness of a person (outside of the Exhibition), direct consent must be received by VU from the subject.
    • Permission given by the subject to the photographer submitting the image to Picturing Footscray is not satisfactory to meet VU’s obligations under the Act.
    • Therefore, if an Artwork contains the recognisable likeness of a person and that Artwork is chosen for the Poster Exhibition, an express consent for VU to publish, or sufficient contact details for the subject must be provided to VU in order for consent to be obtained.  If these details are not provided, or the consent is not obtained, the entry will be ineligible for the Poster Exhibition.
  19. If for any reason any aspect of this competition or exhibition is not capable of running as planned due to any cause beyond the control of VU, VU may in their sole discretion cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the competition and its associated exhibitions.

Personal information

  1. VU will collect your personal information, including your name, likeness, email address and social media account details which it will keep in accordance with the VU privacy policy, located at vu.edu.au/privacy.
  2. In the event that you are a winner of the Promotion, you consent to the disclosure, publication and dissemination of your name and likeness for the purposes of the Promotion, and VU’s advertising and marketing purposes (as winner of the Promotion).
  3. You grant to VU on submission of your entry a royalty free, perpetual, non-exclusive and irrevocable licence to use, reproduce and communicate to the public the entry for the purposes of the Promotion, any purpose connected with the Promotion (now and into the future) and for VU’s advertising and marketing purposes. VU will respect the author’s moral right of attribution in the Artwork.
  4. VU accepts no responsibility for any entries not received for any reason during the Promotion Period. No responsibility will be taken for lost, late or misdirected entries. VU is not responsible for technical difficulties with the entry mechanism and does not warrant that the entry mechanism will be available at all times.

Prize details

  1. There will be five (5) prizes to be won. All amounts in AUD, to be supplied as a prepaid gift card.
    • First prize – Sponsored by Plenary Health: $3,000.00
    • Second prize: $1,000.00
    • Third prize: $500.00
    • People’s Choice Award – Sponsored by the Footscray Connectivity Centre: $500.00
    • Student prize - Sponsored by VU’s Library Service: $500.00
  2. The prize values are correct as at the date of printing.
  3. The prizes are not transferable or exchangeable.

Decision final

In all matters relating to the Promotion, including installations and awards, all decisions of the judge and VU will be final and cannot be contested. No correspondence or discussions will be entered into. Judges’ feedback on submitted artwork will not be provided.
