Victoria University’s world-class sport precinct will be featured as part of Open House Melbourne on Saturday 29 July.

Now in its 10th year, this is the second time a VU site has been selected to feature in the prestigious event, which allows the public access to some of Melbourne’s most significant sites and buildings.

Professor Hans Westerbeek, Pro Vice Chancellor of VU’s Sport Strategy and Dean of its College of Sport and Exercise Science, said VU’s involvement is an exciting opportunity to showcase its world-class sport facilities and high-technology laboratories that support research conducted by its Institute of Sport, Exercise Science and Active Living (ISEAL).

“Our $68 million state-of-the-art research facility at our Footscray Campus is an Australian-first. It has 29 sport and exercise science research laboratories with an adjacent exercise rehabilitation clinic, pool and gymnasium facilities, as well as an altitude hotel,” he said.

The precinct meets international standards for best practice and is designed with many integrated spaces to facilitate interdisciplinary teaching, research and engagement.

The labs support VU’s five major disciplines underpinning its sport and exercise science research:

  • exercise physiology;
  • biomechanics;
  • motor learning and skilled performance;
  • sport and exercise biochemistry and molecular biology;
  • motor control and biofeedback.

VU’s sport precinct is supported by a $51 million clinical sciences building with specialist exercise science facilities at nearby Sunshine Hospital, and an elite sport training facility at Whitten Oval, home to the Western Bulldogs AFL Club.
