Economic worries - therapeutic solutions?

Dr Kristiina Brunila, from University of Helsinki, Finland, is presenting this seminar on entrepreneurial and therapeutic governing of transitions of young adults in Finland.

This seminar is brought to you by the College of Arts & Education as part of the 2017 College Lunchtime & Twilight Seminar series. 

We invite teachers, researchers, masters students and anyone else interested to join us for the seminar.

This presentation will first provide an overview of the Nordic Centre of Excellence (NCE): Justice through Education. This centre supports critical research in sociological, cultural and gender studies, to investigate how educational and social systems, cultures and actors enable or constrain social justice in neoliberal times.

This will be followed by a paper that draws on data from several studies all belonging to a research project 'Youth on the Move – Revisiting the ‘vulnerability zeitgeist’ in an era of market-oriented education' (2014-2017). This is a program of the NCE Justice through Education in the Nordic countries.

The project focuses on the ways in which therapeutic and market-oriented discourses imply and elicit a subjectivity that is simultaneously vulnerable and enterprising.

In education the ethos of vulnerability tends to become more and more powerful. The project is trying understand how and why vulnerability changes expectations and practices related to policies and practices and the extent to which we should regard these changes as educationally and politically progressive.

Kristiina Brunila

Kristiina Brunila is a professor of social justice and equality in education in the University of Helsinki. She is a director of the AGORA for the study of social justice in education-research centre and one of the founding members of the Nordic Centre of Excellence: Justice through Education in the Nordic Countries.

Among social justice she is focused on marketisation, therapisation and neoliberalism in education as well as on human subjectivity, agency and power.
