VU has received an Australian Research Council Linkage Grant to work with Siemens Water Technologies to improve the durability and performance of materials used in the reuse and purification of water. The need to develop new technologies for use in the treatment of water has become a high priority for communities around the world. Communities must constantly manage competing demands for water and ensure water planning and use is sustainable.
VU specialises in research focused on developing technologies that can be used to manage water in Australia and overseas.
Membrane Materials Manufacture project
Membranes play a critical role in water quality and are widely installed in today's water treatment systems. The development of innovative materials helps overcome the loss in membrane performance that occurs over time. The Membrane Materials Manufacture project is focused on improving the durability and performance of hollow fibre membranes with nanocomposite and onorganic/organic hybrid materials. The project aims to develop novel materials with advanced performance in water treatment, improving fouling, chemical resistance and physical durability by incorporating inorganic materials such as silica and alumina. It will also explore ways to link inorganic materials to polymer and the development of optimal nanoparticle size and their dispersion. New membranes developed with potential to be manufactured at industrial scales will be demonstrated in real waters.
Australian Postgraduate Award Industry PhD scholarship
The VU Institute for Sustainability and Innovation is accepting applications for an Australian Postgraduate Award Industry PhD scholarship. The successful applicant will be located in Melbourne and work on an Australian Research Council Linkage Project focused on improving the durability and performance of hollow fibre membranes with nanocomposite and onorganic/organic hybrid materials. The project is sponsored by Siemens Water Technologies in South Windsor, Sydney "" one of the worlds leading suppliers of microfiltration membranes. The successful candidate will be based at VU Werribee Campus and required to travel to Sydney.
Applicants should have a H1/H2A Honours degree in either Chemical Engineering (or similar), Polymer Science, Chemistry, or a Masters degree or demonstrated research potential in the field.
The scholarship package includes an annual tax free stipend of AU$26,669 for 3 years (with a possible 6 month extension), tuition fee scholarship, thesis allowance, and limited relocation allowance.
