VU mooters ready to defend Kirby moot title

Three teams of Victoria University law students will defend VU’s 2012 championship title at the 2013 Hon. Michael Kirby Contract Law Moot Competition on 23–25 September 2013 at VU’s City Queen Campus.

VU Victoria Law School lecturer Vivi Tan pioneered the first Australian inter-university competition for Contract Law in 2011.

The three-day competition has been designed as an ‘in court’ experience to help future advocates showcase their talents. Students demonstrate their research, legal analysis and persuasive advocacy skills in a live court situation. A judging panel question the potential legal counsellors to test the depth of knowledge, the clarity of their thoughts and the thoroughness of their preparation.

Ms Tan believes the advantages this extra curriculum program gives students is significant.

“The Moot court provides a challenging opportunity to hone the skills required of an advocate in a real-life law practice,” she says. “The College of Law and Justice is recognised for its special interest in commercial law, and this program ensures our students have practical legal skills.”

Law School student committee members Nathan Taylor, Robert Forrester and David Rayment organised an inter-school competition to assist the competitors fine-tune their skills. The peer to peer workshops provided training, guidance and practice in front of real lawyers, barristers and mediators.

The support of the legal profession has been integral to the program’s success. David Rayment says it ensures the moot program becomes more than an academic exercise.

“The legal professionals who come to the moots see how passionate we are about advocacy and the practical skills we have,” Mr Rayment says. “This exposure can lead to continued relationships, which can lead to genuine opportunities for future employment.”
