Dedication and determination has paid off for three VU offshore students in China, who are the 2016 recipients of VU English’s Outstanding Student Awards.

Shenghui Qi from Henan University, Zhou Lanxu from Central University of Finance and Economics (CUFE) in Beijing and Ruoyi Li from Liaoning University have just received Outstanding Student Awards in recognition of their academic efforts while studying in the second year of English for Academic Purposes with VU English – the University’s English language centre. This course is the first step in a student's journey towards VU diplomas and degrees.

As part of its offshore teaching program, VU English delivers English language courses including General English, and English for Academic Purposes across several international partner sites – including Henan University, CUFE, City College Huizhou and Liaoning University.

Through these valuable partnerships, students have the opportunity to transfer to a VU diploma or degree, either in their hometown or in Melbourne, after successfully completing the relevant English language course and a gateway entry assessment.

VU English Outstanding Student Award recipient Zhou Lanxu (pictured), from CUFE, says the accolade has encouraged her to strive for future success.

"Winning this award was truly out of my expectation because I thought other nominees in CUFE were excellent students that I have been admiring," Zhou says.

"It is precious praise for what I have done in recent years but it doesn't mean I can ignore my flaws," she says.

"I feel it’s crucial to have an objective judgement about my ability and to keep learning from others."

After completing her VU/CUFE course, Zhou says she plans to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language to “prepare for my further education abroad and to have a better command of English".

"It has encouraged me to strive for achievements in the future that match this award," she says.

Now in its third year, VU English’s Outstanding Student Awards are presented annually to top-performing, second-year English language students at VU English’s offshore delivery institutions.

Up to four students are nominated at each partner university, with the nominees required to write; a 200-word profile about their study pathway, achievements, goals and interests; a 5-minute video introducing themselves; and a 2-minute video outlining the benefits of being a VU English student.
