On yer bike!

Member for Footscray, Marsha Thomson MP joined Victoria University Pro Vice-Chancellor (Institutional Services) Rob Brown on 2 March to launch a new bike hub at the University's Footscray Nicholson Campus.

The hub is part of the University's commitment to sustainable transport and has been installed to increase the number of students and staff cycling to the campus.

Funded partly by the Victorian Government under a partnership program, the bicycle facility features parking spots for up to 41 bikes in a secure lock-up area with shower facilities and lockers.

Other bike hubs are planned later this year in the new Sport and Learning precinct now under construction at the Footscray Park Campus and at Whitten Oval.

VU aims to increase the numbers of staff and students using sustainable transport by five per cent each year. Currently four per cent of students and five per cent of staff cycle to the Footscray Nicholson Campus.

VU Sustainability Officer Anne McLean said the bike hub will provide staff and students with a secure facility to park their bicycle during the day and will overcome impediments associated with cycling to the campus, such as being hot and sweaty on arrival or the dreaded 'helmet hair' syndrome.
