A delegation of Chinese lawyers participating in this year’s Sir Zelman Cowen Centre legal education program at Victoria University has received a warm welcome from Attorney-General Martin Pakula.

The 24 mid-career lawyers from Victoria's sister province of Jiangsu spent an afternoon at Parliament House where they met with a number of parliamentarians and took a #selfie with the Attorney-General.

The lawyers were also welcomed by VU Alumni and Speaker of the House Hon Telmo Languiller. The visit forms part of an eight-week training program at Victoria University.

The Speaker explained the importance of the visit saying, "The program consolidates industry relationships and legal networks between our two nations. By visiting Parliament House, the delegates are able to see Victorian democracy in action."

Adding to the welcome, Attorney-General Martin Pakula said, "I am pleased to welcome the Jiangsu delegation to Victoria and I congratulate them on being chosen for this program".

"This program recognises the delegates’ skills and dedication to the legal profession, and gives them a better understanding of Australian law."

The Hon Nicola Roxon, Chair of the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre, said, "The unique program draws on our close connections with the legal community, and offers Chinese lawyers the opportunity to gain skills and knowledge covering a range of perspectives".

The program benefits from Victoria University’s prime location in the heart of the legal precinct and includes visits to a range of law firms, companies and courts.

Delegates are introduced to the principles of Australian law through a series of lectures from Australian lawyers and business people. The delegates will also be encouraged to develop ongoing local networks and to identify business opportunities in Australia.

The education program is also an opportunity for Australian lawyers to gain a better understanding of Chinese culture and legal systems from the delegates.
