VU paramedic lecturer awarded prestigious overseas study tour scholarship

Victoria University's Peter Hartley, Senior Lecturer of Paramedics at St Albans Campus is about to wing his way around the world on a study tour, to the UK, USA and Canada, thanks to a $10,000 scholarship from the Australian College of Ambulance Professionals (ACAP)

The ten-week tour will see Peter visiting universities that deliver paramedic programs as well as ambulance services.

Peter, who lives in Mitcham, will be leaving Melbourne in the last week on December this year.

He said that he will be visiting London, Birmingham, Bristol, Swansea, Liverpool, Manchester, Yorkshire, Vancouver, Seattle, Washington, Toronto, Buffalo, Detroit, Barrie, Sudbury, Sault Ste Marie, Boston, New York, and Syracuse.

The tour will study four areas that have the potential to make a significant contribution to pre-hospital practice in Victoria with a national flow-on: Extended Practice / Community Paramedicine; Paramedic Registration / Nationally Recognised Qualifications; Paramedic Education; and Cross Cultural Issues in Pre-hospital Health Service Delivery.

ACAP is the leading representative association for professionals engaged in the delivery of pre-hospital emergency medical systems, and it provides a national platform for policies and representation to enhance the quality of pre-hospital emergency patient care in Australia.  It offers a range of scholarships, grants and other opportunities to assist its members in keeping up-to-date with current research and practice.

Members can undertake advanced studies in Australia or overseas., through participation in formal courses of education or training or by attachment for study or observation with other agencies, educational or training institutions to advance their educational and professional standards.

VU offers a Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedic) course, and after the study tour, Peter will be able to share what he has learned with his paramedic colleagues and with the University's paramedic students.
