Victoria University honours leading Alumni

Victoria University honoured the success of its graduates and students in four categories at the 2012 Alumni Awards presentation held this week.

The Awards recognise leadership, integrity and excellence, and acknowledge the recipients' contribution to the community and to Victoria University.

The highest profile award is the Distinguished Alumni Award which this year was awarded to Mr. Kevin Qiang Li, a graduate of VU's Master of Business Administration in 1996. Mr. Li has demonstrated excellence as a leader in both business and community and has been tireless in fostering Australia-China relations and in particular has assisted in promoting VU's relationships in China. Mr. Li is the Co-founder and Managing Director of Concorde Investment Management Co., and Chair of the Board of Kunlin Advertising Co. Ltd. which is a subsidiary of Concorde Investment Management. He is currently President of the Australian Chamber of Commerce – South China, and President of the Australia China Alumni Association – South China.

Honorary Lifetime Alumni Service Award

Mr. John Thompson is a three time graduate of Victoria University –Bachelor of Arts (1994), Graduate Diploma-Marketing (1998), and Master of Business (2001). He makes an exemplary contribution to the University and to the broader community through his professional career and his volunteer work both in Australia and in developing nations. For more than eight years John has devoted his time to making Victoria's roads safer as the Senior Manager, Road Safety & Marketing at the Transport Accident Commission with a major responsibility for the development of the TAC's road safety education campaigns. John has contributed to the VU Alumni Community as a past member of the Alumni Advisory Group. He is an active member of Chaplains without Borders.

Young Achiever Alumni Award (two awards given)

Mr. Nussen Ainsworth completed a VU Bachelor of Laws in 2011 and is now a graduate lawyer with Brand Partners.  From early in his legal career Nussen was innovative and passionate about how technology and social media might contribute to the legal profession. Nussen was nominated for the 2012 Law Institute of Victoria President's Award in the Rising Star of the Year category for his outstanding innovation and achievement as a young lawyer. Nussen is also an ordained rabbi and a committee member of his local synagogue, and volunteers his time to help young professionals.

Ms Chelsea Hatherall completed a Certificate IV, Business at VU in 2010. She is currently Marketing and Communications Coordinator at the Footscray Community Arts Centre and is dynamic and energetic in her approach to her work. During 2012 Chelsea was given a place in the Bite The Big Apple Tour – an arts management tour that accepts only 12 Australians every year. She is on the Hobsons Bay Council  Women's Advisory Committee, and been named Hobsons Bay City Council's Youth Citizen of the Year, and Maribyrnong City Council's emerging community leader. She is also for the third year running, an artist in the Art in Public Places Program.

Outstanding Student Alumni Award

Mr. Garry Kuan is currently studying for a PhD in Sport Psychology at Victoria University. He also has a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science from Universiti Sains Malaysia, and an Advanced Diploma in Violin Performance from the London College of Music and Media. Garry has an excellent academic record and participates in Victoria University governance as an elected Council member. Garry has acted as Orientation Host for international students; is a recipient of a Student Leadership Award; and recently received the award of International Student of the Year.
