Victoria University Basketball Academy launched

Victoria University’s College of Sport and Exercise Science is excited to announce a new sporting partnership with one of basketball’s most highly respected professionals, Andrew Gaze and Australian Basketball Resources, to form the Victoria University (VU) Basketball Academy.

The VU Basketball Academy brings together Victoria University and Australian Basketball Resources state-of-the-art sporting facilities, sport science capability, and teaching expertise along with extensive sporting networks and coaching experience.

VU Basketball Academy will be offering a Diploma of Sport Development (Basketball) commencing in 2014.

The Diploma will give student athletes the opportunity to reach their sporting and academic potential through on and off-court experiences that maximise their career outcomes. They will access extensive basketball networks and cutting edge course materials informed by the latest in sports science.

Andrew Gaze, basketball legend and VU alumnus said “The VU Basketball Academy program will provide the highest level of coaching tuition for those motivated to reach their basketball potential.

“The curriculum has been designed by leading VU sports science specialists, and taps into my forty years of basketball experience. The coaching staff and I bring a passion and expertise that will provide both a practical and theoretical teaching of the game.”

In June 2013 Andrew was inducted into the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Hall of Fame and recognised as one of basketball’s greats.

Dean of the VU College of Sport and Exercise Science, Professor Hans Westerbeek said, “The College offers leading sports science facilities for elite sports; seven fitness centres across our campuses; and a range of specialist sports research laboratories. Victoria University aims to be Australia’s leading sports university.

“Student athletes will benefit from our global knowledge of world's best practice for individual and team performance in the sport of basketball.

“It will also importantly provide a recognised qualification, with a Diploma that has locally and globally relevant graduate outcomes,” Professor Westerbeek said.
