Managing Director of Mushroom Music Publishing, Mr. Ian James, one of Australia’s most well respected music industry identities, will take up a new role as Adjunct Professor in Victoria University's College of Business.
Dean of the College of Business, Professor Colin Clark said, “We are delighted to have Ian James at Victoria University. For many years under his leadership, Mushroom music has provided internships for students in our music industry program. We currently have four graduates who are full time employees at Mushroom Victoria, and in his new role, Ian will further extend the work that he has been doing with us.”
Ian James recently celebrated 27 years with Mushroom Music and has been involved with VU’s Bachelor of Business (Music Industry) course since its inception in 1998. He was instrumental in its creation and original development.
The Bachelor of Business (Music Industry) was the first tertiary music business course to be established in Australia.
One of the course developers, lecturer Adrian Marchesani said, “The course curriculum contains core business subjects and units relevant to the music industry including specific areas like record labels, music publishing, live touring, and marketing and promotion.
“We invite people who are active participants in the music industry to give lectures so students receive specialised information and get a taste of the spirit in which things are done. To succeed in the music business you have to know a lot more than the basic facts of how things work,” he said.
Ian James is a regular guest lecturer and his commitment to the course is invaluable in showing students that the industry highly values the Victoria University degree and its graduates and offers opportunities in the industry.
Ian will continue to commit his time and expertise as adjunct professor and will lend significant credibility to the course, as well as offering great benefits to student learning.
Ian James said, “It is great how the music business course at Victoria University is growing in reputation. I’m proud to be associated with it and enjoy interacting with the students coming through. They are the future of our business.”
