Seminar: The Case of Young Graffiti Writers

This event has already taken place.

Wednesday 9 April 2014

Join Dr Alison Baker on Wednesday 9 April 2014, as she explores how alternative arts programs can reach out to the city's disengaged youth in her seminar: Contesting Citizenship at the Margins: The Case of Young Graffiti Writers.

Dr Baker believes that street art offers young people a voice and gives them a sense of belonging.

"These young people are often ignored and tagged as criminals and misfits in the 'war against graffiti'."

"Legal street art programs can act as important sanctioned spaces, giving them a chance to be heard and tell their own stories," says Dr Baker.

Using multiple methods this study investigates the experiences of young graffiti artists and questions our understanding of 'normative' citizenship.

The seminar will address the following:

  • How do young people construct their identities in and out of a legal graffiti program?
  • Can alternative arts programs and spaces facilitate the development of young people's citizenship practice?
