Resilience matters: Community support for young people

This event has already taken place.

Thursday 16 October 2014

Professor Pat Drake, Dean, College of Education, invites you to participate in the 2014 Diamond Series.

'Resilience' is often described in ways that suggest we all know what it means and you either have it or you don't, whether referring to individuals, families or communities. Yet what resilience means depends on the kinds of difficult circumstances or adversity people have to deal with and considering why resilience matters is then not only personal, it is a social and political issue. No-one is magically resilient: support and resources of many kinds are part of the resilience process.

Drawing on a range of local and international resilience research findings, Dr Dorothy Bottrell will discuss these conundrums with a focus on the role of 'community' in young people's resilience, including the important work of community organisations in providing support and resources that generate resilience.
